Roy Larking is one of the most talented découpeurs in the world. He was President of the Guild of the British Découpeurs, and he is renowned for being the only Guild member invited to teach decoupage at the famous Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 2007. Roy is a very generous teacher always willing to share instructions, informations and tips whether you are an old hand at decoupage or just beginning your journey.

Roy, come hai scoperto il Découpage?
Nel 1993 facevo shopping nel West End di Londra, e nelle vetrine di Piccadilly ho notato degli allettanti portapenne con scene di caccia. Stupefatto per l’alto costo di questi oggetti, avevo deciso di riprodurli da solo. Non conoscevo ancora il découpage, ma come regalo di compleanno mio figlio mi iscrisse alla National Guild of Découpeurs (NGD Associazione americana, oggi Worldwide Artists of Découpage. NdA) con sede negli Stati Uniti. Tramite la NGD ho saputo dell' Associazione dei Découpeurs Britannici (GBD). Mi sono iscritto nel 1994, e a seguito di un grande coinvolgimento, ne sono diventato Presidente dal 1997 al 2002.
Credo che il Découpage sia stato un utile contrasto rispetto alla mia carriera di vigile del fuoco, fornendomi un utile metodo di rilassamento.
Ricordo il primo incontro con la GBD. Avevo portato qualche pezzo che avevo preparato, ma li ho lasciati in macchina, non convinto della loro qualità…
Successivamente ho partecipato a 5 Conventions della NGD in varie città americane e canadesi, in cui ho tratto giovamento non solo dai vari laboratori, ma anche dalle numerose amicizie che mi hanno formato in questi meravigliosi eventi.
Mi ritengo privilegiato nel mantenere molte di queste amicizie oggigiorno. La generosa condivisione di conoscenza e tecniche con questi talentuosi découpeurs americani mi ha consentito di ottenere enormi soddisfazioni da questa impegnativa e gratificante forma d’arte che ancora mi affascina come non mai.
Roy, how did you discover Découpage?
In about 1993 I was shopping in the West End of London and 'window gazing' in an arcade off Picadilly. I noticed some very attractive pen pots with hunting scenes. I was amazed at the high prices being asked for such items. I decided to have a go at reproducing the pen pots. I made several and some letter racks and covered them with prints. I didn't know about découpage at that time. As a surprise birthday present, my son enrolled me in The National Guild of Découpeurs based in USA. They informed me that there was a Guild of British Découpeurs. I promptly joined in 1994 and got further involved in this fascinating art becoming President of the Guild from 1997 till 2002. Whilst I have always enjoyed doing various art related activities. I think découpage was a useful contrast to my career as a London Firefighter and provided an ideal, non stressful alternative. I remember well attending my first GBD. meeting. I took a couple of pieces I had done but left them in my car, not having the confidence that they were good enough to show to others. I have attended five NGD conventions in various US. cities and enjoyed not only the many workshops, but also the numerous friendships that were forged at these wonderful events. I am privileged to still maintain many of these friendships to this day. The generous sharing of découpage knowledge and techniques by these talented US découpeurs have enabled me to gain enormous satisfaction from this challenging, fulfilling and enjoyable art form, which still holds as much fascination for me today as ever it did.
Puoi raccontarci com’è nata l’Associazione inglese di Découpage?
La nascita della nostra Associazione è in gran parte dovuta all’entusiasmo di una signora di nome Mary Lewis. Nel 1993 Mary era già membro della National Guild of Découpeurs negli Stati Uniti. Dava lezioni di découpage nello studiolo della sua casa di Nailsworth, nel Gloucestershire. Come risultato di un annuncio che pubblicò in un giornale di hobbystica, un piccolo gruppo di 5 persone si incontrò per la prima volta il 28 marzo 1993. Il nostro attuale Presidente, Madeleine Smith, ed il nostro Tesoriere Barry Cullumbine erano entrambi all’incontro inaugurale. I primi incontri si sono tenuti nella casa di uno dei primi membri del gruppo a Todenham, Gloucestershire; la sala comunale del Villaggio è il posto ideale per questi incontri. Difatti è lì che l’Associazione tiene ancora oggi i suoi incontri bimestrali tutt'oggi.
Could you please tell us how the GBD was born?
The formation of our Guild was largely due to the enthusiasm of a lady named Mary Lewis. In 1993 Mary was already a member of The National Guild of Découpeurs in the USA. She was giving découpage lessons in her small studio at her home in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire. As the result of a notice she placed in a Craft Magazine, a small group of 5 attended the very first meeting on 28 March 1993. Our current President Madeleine Smith and our Treasurer Barry Cullumbine were both at that inaugural meeting. Whilst the first few meetings were held in the homes of the the group, it eventually met in Todenham, Gloucestershire, this being the home of an early member, and the village hall there proved to be an ideal venue. Indeed the Guild still holds its bi-monthly meetings in the hall to this day.

What are the characteristics of this bi-monthly meetings?
These informal meetings include a hands on workshop taken by a member who demonstrates a particular technique or skill. These meetings have proved a sociable and enjoyable opportunity for members to discuss their projects and 'just talk découpage'. Our workshops are termed 'hands on' because all those attending will join in and do whatever the workshop is about.
Quali sono i rapporti tra l’Associazione Inglese e la NGD americana ?
La GBD è diventata una succursale della NGD nel 1994, e conseguentemente ha adottato la sua Costituzione, i suoi standard di giudizio e la quota associativa annuale. Successivamente il numero degli iscritti nel Regno Unito è aumentato sensibilmente.
Nel 2000 i nostri iscritti erano 40 o più, e pian piano hanno sentito l’esigenza di gestire l’Associazione autonomamente, e nell’Aprile di quell’anno, seguendo il voto di tutti i soci, è stato deciso di tagliare i legami con la NGD, e l’Associazione è divenuta indipendente.
La separazione è stata amichevole; qualche socio è rimasto anche membro dell’NGD.
Una nuova costituzione, standard di giudizio e riconoscimenti, nonché un concorso per determinare il lavoro più apprezzato dell'anno furono approntati ed introdotti l’anno seguente dal Comitato Direttivo dell’associazione ed approvato dai soci. Il bisogno di sforzarsi per mantenere l’alta qualità del découpage era incorporato nei nuovi standards.
What is the relationship between the GBD and the NGD?
The Guild became a 'Chapter' or branch of the NGD in 1994 and consequently adopted its Constitution, Judging Standards and Annual Dues. The Guild membership gradually increased with members spread throughout the UK. In 2000 our membership stood at 40 or more and we gradually came to the view that they would prefer to manage the Guild themselves and in April that year, following a vote by the whole membership, it was decided to sever ties with NGD and the Guild became independent. The separation was friendly and good natured and several individual members remained NGD members too. A new Constitution, Judging Standards and Awards as well as a President's Challenge competition were devised and introduced the following year by the Guild's Management Committee of four and was approved by the membership. The need to strive towards and to maintain the highest standards of découpage was incorporated in these new standards.

Nell’autunno del 2004 l’Associazione è stata invitata alla Cattedrale di Liverpool per découpare una grande tavola rotonda consistente in 9 segmenti; ognuno dei quali era da decorare con lavori realizzati da bambini delle differenti fedi religiose ed è stata chiamata “La Tavola della Fede”. La tavola completamente decoupata fu esposta in una speciale e memorabile funzione nella Cattedrale, a cui i membri della GBD presero parte. La tavola è utilizzata per gli incontri dei gruppi giovanili delle diverse confessioni.
Have you ever had any social occasions (circumstances) to hold demonstrations to promote your art?
In the Autumn of 2004 the Guild was invited by Liverpool Cathedral to découpage a large round table consisting of 9 segments; each one was to be covered by art works made by children from different faith groups and was named 'The Table of Faith'. The completed découpaged table was displayed at a special service at the Cathedral and the Guild members involved attended the memorable service. The table is used to hold youth group meetings at the various faith venues in the city.
Restando in tema di occasioni speciali, puoi raccontarci un tuo momento di particolare soddisfazione?
Il Découpage mi ha procurato molti momenti memorabili in diversi Paesi, e nell’agosto dello scorso anno ho avuto la fortuna di aggiungerne un altro. In luglio, attraverso il sito dell’Associazione sono stato invitato a tenere un corso di due giorni al Victoria and Albert Museum di Londra. Questo ha rappresentato molto per me, perché ho visitato la prima volta il V&A quando ero ancora ragazzino, e per anni è rimasto il mio preferito tra tutti i meravigliosi musei di Londra, soprattutto per l'incomparabile varietà di arti decorative che mi attraeva allora come oggi.
And talking about very special occasions, could you tell us about a memorable moment you had in your career as a Découpeur?
Découpage has provided me with many memorable moments in a number of different countries, and in August last year I was very fortunate to add another. In July, via our Guild website, I was invited to give a ‘Two Day Beginners’ Course’ at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. This was particularly special for me because I had first visited the Museum as a schoolboy, and despite all the other wonderful museums in London, the V&A has remained a favourite over the years, especially for the fantastic range of decorative arts on display which so appealed to me then and still does to this day.

The Guild membership generally fluctuates with members coming and going, but a nucleus of members remains and we continue to promote the wonderful art of découpage in all its various forms. Quali sono le tecniche del découpage che la GBD prevalentemente insegna o diffonde?
Annegamento, sottovetro, 3D, repoussé (tecnica 3D con la pasta), découpage con carta di riso su portacandele e vasi, le tecniche dell’antica finitura craquelé, l’uso dell’intarsio con la madreperla, l’uso della carta di riso, cloisonné… tutto ciò che i nostri soci vogliono imparare.
Which are the découpage techniques that the GBD mainly intend to teach, develop or spread?
Under varnish - under glass - elevations - repousse' - luminaires the techniques of 'antique crackle finish' - use of mother of pearl inlay - use of 'rice papers', cloisonné, illumination - 'gilding'.Whatever the members want to try.
Cosa pensi dell’attuale panorama italiano del découpage?
Temo che la mia conoscenza del panorama delle attuali tecniche del découpage in Italia sia limitata a ciò che ho appreso dalla mia visita a Pizzighettone nel 2006.
Sono rimasto davvero impressionato sia dal numero dei partecipanti che dal loro entusiasmo e dalla loro abilità. Mi ha sorpreso anche il numero dei corsi disponibili. Ritengo una fortuna l’essere stato invitato a prendere parte alla giuria e sono rimasto colpito sia dalla quantità che dalla qualità degli oggetti.
What do you think of the current découpage overview in Italy?
I regret that my knowledge of the current Italian découpage techniques is limited to that gained from my invitation by the Italian Guild to Pizzighettone in 2006 to take workshops. I was very impressed, firstly by numbers attending the event, also by their enthusiasm, ability and eagerness to learn. The number of workshops taking place was amazing. I was fortunate in being invited to take part in the judging and was impressed by both the quantity and quality of the pieces I saw.
Avete delle competizioni annuali come Découpage Italia?
Si, abbiamo la nostra certificazione annuale in ottobre. Abbiamo inoltre una “President's Challenge Competition” in cui i pezzi sono presentati dai membri con quota nominale, ed ognuno dei presenti vota per i propri lavori preferiti. Chi ha più voti, vince.
Do you have an annual competition, as well as the one we have with Découpage Italia?
We have our annual judging meeting in October. At this meeting we also hold a 'President's Challenge Competition': pieces are submitted by members for a nominal fee and everyone present votes for their favourite piece, 'the peoples choice' the person with the most votes wins.
Quali criteri adottate per definire la qualità del lavoro degli associati?
Il nostro sistema di giudizio prevede che i singoli membri possano ottenere una stella d’oro, d’argento o di bronzo, oppure un certificato di encomio. Coloro a cui sono state assegnate 3 stelle d’oro conseguono una medaglia di bronzo; per 4 stelle d’oro una medaglia d’argento; per 6 una medaglia d’oro. (V. foto) Abbiamo optato per la possibilità di conseguire il massimo riconoscimento senza doversi necessariamente dedicare a differenti tecniche di découpage. Siamo severi e richiediamo un'alta qualità dei lavori, al fine di mantenere un certo standard.
Which criteria do you have to judge members’ works quality?
Our Judging System provides for individual members to obtain either gold, silver or bronze stars or a commended certificate. Those who have obtained 3 gold stars are awarded a bronze medal, for four gold stars a silver medal and for six gold stars a gold medal, our highest award. - pictures attached. We took the view that a person should be able to obtain the top award without having to do lots of different types of découpage. We are strict and require a high quality of work, this is to maintain standards.
